Ensuring Environmental Flow (E-Flow) in Bharathapuzha

Environmental Flow (E-Flow) refers to maintaining a continuous and adequate flow of water in the river throughout the year—not just during the monsoon, but also during the dry summer months. A river must flow to remain alive. When water flow reduces drastically outside the monsoon season, it affects aquatic biodiversity, groundwater recharge, agriculture, drinking water availability, and the overall ecological balance of the basin.

Over-extraction of water, upstream diversions, sand mining, and catchment degradation have significantly reduced the natural flow regime of the Bharathapuzha. During summer, many stretches of the river dry up or turn into stagnant pools, leading to water quality deterioration and ecosystem stress.

Ensuring E-Flow means scientifically managing water resources so that a minimum, sustainable flow is always maintained in the river. This involves coordinated water release policies, regulated extraction, watershed restoration, and integrated basin management.

Maintaining year-round flow is essential not only for ecological sustainability but also for preserving the cultural, social, and economic lifeline that the Bharathapuzha represents.

Key Actions to Ensure E-Flow

1

Maintain Minimum Year-Round Flow

Ensure continuous flow even during summer.
2

Regulate Water Flow Extraction

Limit excessive upstream withdrawals.
3

Scientific Water Release Management

Align dam operations with ecological needs.
4

Strengthen Basin-Wide Management

Implement integrated river basin planning.
